3 Country Songs From the 2000s That Feel Like Letters to Someone Special

Maybe it’s because I grew up in the early 2000s, but pretty much every country song from this era seems to hit ten times harder. From Brad Paisley to Rascal Flatts, here are a few country songs from the 2000s that read like letters to someone special.

“Letter To Me” by Brad Paisley

In “Letter To Me”, Brad Paisley writes to his teenage self. The song contains real details from his life, including the name of a teacher, Mrs. Brinkman, whom he actually had in a speech class. The song’s music video was even filmed where Paisley went to high school—talk about a full-circle moment! The details in this song are both realistic but also clever, which I think is what really sells it.

“If I could write a letter to me / And send it back in time to myself at 17 / First I’d prove it’s me by saying / ‘Look under your bed / There’s a Skoal can and a Playboy / No one else would know you hid.’”

“Baby Girl” by Sugarland

“Baby Girl” probably feels like a letter because it literally sings like one. It’s also totally based on real feelings, as Sugarland member Jennifer Nettles explained to Songfacts. In “Baby Girl”, a dreamer sings to her family back home while she tries to make it big.

“…[The song] was not only autobiographical, but it was also a self-fulfilling prophecy in the sense that it was the first single, and it manifested itself in a way of showing that success,” Nettles explained. “And granted, every artist – every person, really – can relate to having a dream and wanting to go after it, and wanting to make your folks proud, and having that be part of the joy of it…”

“My Wish” by Rascal Flatts

In “My Wish”, Rascal Flatts summarizes how every loving parent feels about their child in a simple four-minute track. This one always makes me emotional. Overall, this song sounds like it could be for someone you care about, whether that’s someone you’re letting go of or someone you plan to hold close forever.
