Some songs lodge themselves so deeply inside our brains that we’ll remember the words—if only to the chorus—decades after we first heard them. This is especially true of these Top 40 hits from 1973, all of which every baby boomer alive can likely still sing by heart.

“Ramblin’ Man” by The Allman Brothers Band

The Allman Brothers Band released “Ramblin’ Man” on their fourth studio album, Brothers And Sisters, to great acclaim. This commercial win was bittersweet, as it was the first album the band released that didn’t feature the late Duane Allman, who died in a motorcycle accident in 1971. As tragic as this was for the band and the rock world in general, The Allman Brothers Band persisted. And indeed, it’s hard not to feel good when singing along to the words “I was born a ramblin’ man / Trying to make a living, and doing the best I can.”

“Stuck In The Middle With You” by Stealers Wheel

Scottish rock ‘n’ rollers Stealers Wheel included “Stuck In The Middle With You” on their eponymous debut from 1972. The track came out as a single the following year. Because the band split three years later, Stealers Wheel (and their big hit from 1973) are technically one-hit wonders. But that means nothing when it comes to being a song that baby boomers can still sing by heart. Bonus points if you have two friends to point to when you sing “Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle with you.”

“Delta Dawn” by Helen Reddy

Several versions of “Delta Dawn” came out by the time 1973 rolled around, including the original singer, Alex Harvey, Tanya Tucker, and Bette Midler. Helen Reddy offered her version in 1973, which immediately soared to the top of the charts, much like the ascending key changes in Reddy’s rendition. Sheer repetition helped lodge this song into baby boomers’ brains, until they couldn’t help but sing along to the chorus. “Delta Dawn, what’s that flower you have on? / Could it be a faded rose from days gone byyyyy? / And did I hear you say he was a-meetin’ you here today to take you to his mansion in the sky?”

“You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon

Finally, the last song on this list of 1973 hits every baby boomer can sing by heart is one that needs an asterisk. Technically, “You’re So Vain” came out in November 1972. However, it didn’t reach full-on “hit” status until the following year. Who was so vain? Isn’t the song actually about them? And if so, are they really vain? All these questions remain unanswered. Nevertheless, it remains a favorite among baby boomers (and, in Gen X and millennials’ cases, a favorite among fans of the rom-com How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days).
