Country ballads have this special ability to just soothe the soul. When it comes to the following country ballads from 1969, specifically, many a baby boomer out there probably still remembers them. They’re just that gorgeous.
“Statue Of A Fool” by Jack Greene from ‘Statue Of A Fool’
Unsurprisingly, Jack Greene makes it to this list with one of his finest ballads. Written by Jan Crutchfield, “Statue Of A Fool” is a heartbreaker with that classic late-60s country sound. Considering Greene’s version made it to the top of the Hot Country Songs chart, you probably remember it. It’s also been covered by quite a few musicians in the years since, from Brian Collins to Bill Medley to Ricky Van Shelton.
“I Love You More Today” by Conway Twitty from ‘I Love You More Today’
Conway Twitty knew his way around a traditional, somber country ballad. And “I Love You More Today” is one such excellent ballad. This hit song from the album of the same name was written by L. E. White and dropped in April 1969. “I Love You More Today” soared up the charts to No. 1 in the US and No. 2 in Canada.
“Singing My Song” by Tammy Wynette from ‘Tammy’s Greatest Hits’
Tammy Wynette’s finest songs were the ones she wrote herself. And this co-written effort between her, Billy Sherrill, and Glenn Sutton is a gorgeous example. “Singing My Song” was released in March 1969 and came close to becoming a crossover hit for the country crooner. The track topped the Hot Country Songs chart and the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart, and made it to No. 75 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“All I Have To Offer You (Is Me)” by Charley Pride from ‘The Best Of Charley Pride’
Many a baby boomer out there would agree that Charley Pride had some solid ballads, including this country classic from 1969. “All I Have To Offer You (Is Me)” was actually first recorded by Johnny Bush the year prior, but Pride’s version of the tune became a smash hit when it dropped in 1969. His version topped the Hot Country Songs chart and inched its way onto the Hot 100, though it wasn’t a Top 40 hit there. If you’ve ever been in love and felt like you didn’t have much to offer the object of your affection, this song might just resonate with you.
