If You Went to Prom in 1971, You Remember These 3 One-Hit Wonders

Remember prom night, 1971? If your prom took place that year, you might remember the music just as much as anything else. In fact, I bet many a prom night in 1971 featured the music stylings of these three one-hit wonders that dropped that year. A few of these tunes might just send you back in time.

“Chick-A-Boom (Don’t Ya Jes’ Love It)” by Daddy Dewdrop from ‘Daddy Dewdrop’

This pop one-hit wonder was quite a hit back in 1971. And, surprisingly, it doesn’t feature much singing. Rather, Daddy Dewdrop dishes out some spoken-word goodness on “Chick-A-Boom (Don’t Ya Jes’ Love It)”, and listeners at the time were very much into it. This song reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that year. Sadly for Daddy Dewdrop, a.k.a. Richard “Dick” Monda, he never had as big a hit again and never returned to the Hot 100 chart.

“What The World Needs Now Is Love” by Tom Clay from ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’

There’s no way this song didn’t make it to virtually every prom night in the early-to-mid-1970s. It’s just such a classic. And, interestingly enough, Tom Clay’s hit song is actually a cover. This very memorable tune was first a hit for Jackie DeShannon in 1965, written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach. Clay’s version brought the classic song to a new generation, and his song peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100 chart. Clay, whose main profession was spinnin’ discs and working as a radio personality, never had as big a hit again.

“She’s All I Got” by Freddie North from ‘Friend’

If your prom took place in the South, you got to enjoy quite a few country music jams that night, I bet. One of them might have been Freddie North’s version of the Gary U.S. Bonds and Jerry Williams Jr. classic, “She’s All I Got”. This entry on our list of 1971 one-hit wonders that were played at prom just barely made it to the Top 40 of the Hot 100. Unfortunately for North, he never made it to the Top 40 again.
