For any fan of country music, they can easily name some of the biggest stars in the genre. There was Chris Stapleton, Garth Brooks, Morgan Wallen, Reba McEntire, Ella Langley, and Luke Combs. But behind each one of those stars was an entire team of people making sure their concerts and careers stayed on track. For Dale Morris, he made a name for himself when helping launch the careers of both Alabama and Kenny Chesney. Just a sample of the impact Morris had on country, he sadly passed away at 89.
On Friday, country music lost an icon. While Morris wasn’t one to command the stage, he helped shape the sound of country music. It was during the late 1970s when he met Alabama. Quickly noticing the talent the group possessed, Dale Morris & Associates navigated the band’s career to include over two dozen No. 1 hits. That was just the start, as Alabama was also named Entertainer of the Year three times.
The success only followed as Morris turned his attention to Chesney. Considering him a close friend, the manager brought Chesney numerous awards. And just like Alabama, the hitmaker snagged the Entertainer of the Year award not three times but four. He also recorded over 30 No. 1 hits.
Working alongside Morris for years, his protege, Clint Higham, honored not just his career but his life. “He lived a big, bold, beautiful, blessed life, and I’m holding onto that right now. It’s the end of an era.” Higham added, “Dale Morris gave me my first internship, and I never wanted to go anywhere else. He saw things in people, in me, in Kenny, and inspired everyone to reach beyond what we thought possible. Maybe it’s how much he loved life, loved his family, loved us.”

As for Chesney, he remembered Morris when writing his 2025 book, Heart Life Music. Dedicating a portion of the book to Morris, the singer wrote, “I didn’t bother meeting with another manager. Dale loved the game, and he loved coming up with new ways to do it. If I was willing to work as hard as I said, maybe I was the kid who’d let him do it all over again. He didn’t believe in contracts. Didn’t have one with Alabama, didn’t need one with me. He said, ‘Let’s do it.’”
Leaving behind a career that will span generations, Morris once revealed the secret behind his success. “We’ve elected to stay small rather than to try to sign every act in the world. That way we were able to do what we were able to do and book and manage. Everybody seemed to be happy. We never signed contracts with any of the acts we represented. You come with us and if you want to leave us tomorrow, pay us what you owe us and out the door you go.”
From Alabama to Chesney, Morris spent decades helping artists reach heights they once only dreamed about. And although an era ended with his death, the music he helped bring to fans will continue.
