Remember jumping on the bus back in 1987, when you were just a kid, and jamming out with your friends to either the radio or a cassette tape? That was a common occurrence for many an 80s kid back then, and these four songs often made an appearance. Let’s get nostalgic with it, shall we?
“I Want Your Sex” by George Michael from ‘Faith’
The bus was a good place to listen to music that your parents otherwise wouldn’t let you listen to at all. That was certainly the case for this particularly sensual song by George Michael. If you were an 80s kid, you definitely heard it but likely listened to it as far away from your parents as possible to avoid getting in trouble.
While this dance-pop classic wasn’t exactly appropriate for kids, it was a smash hit with adults in 1987. “I Want Your Sex” peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached the Top 10 around the world.
“Mony Mony (Live)” by Billy Idol from ‘Idol Songs: 11 Of The Best’
The original version of this song can be traced way back to 1968 when Tommy James and The Shondells dropped their garage rock version. In fact, Billy Idol actually released a version of this song ahead of 1987, and it was one of the singles off his 1981 EP Don’t Stop. The live version of “Mony Mony”, released in 1987, was a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100 and a No. 7 hit on the UK Singles chart.
“Head To Toe” by Lisa Lisa And Cult Jam from ‘Spanish Fly’
How about a little bit of freestyle soul? Lisa Lisa And Cult Jam had quite a hit on their hands with “Head To Toe”. This song peaked at No. 1 on several US charts, from the Hot 100 to the Dance Club Songs chart.
“Alone” by Heart from ‘Bad Animals’
If you were a young fan of Heart back in the 80s, you’re probably still a fan today. And you definitely listened to their entry on our list of nostalgic songs from 1987 while you rode the bus to school. “Alone” is actually a cover of an arena rock song by the band i-Ten, released in 1983. Heart turned the song into a soft rock ballad for the ages. Their version reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart.
